I have a question for anyone who may be able to help. I have a 1980 Mercury 150 that has been giving me a little grief as of late. I have had some "bogging" issues when cold. I'll push the throttle out in the water and the boat seems to barely get on plain, then out of the blue, it seems to kick in and take off.
Yesterday, I put a test light between the wire and plug to see if I was getting a consistent spark on my cylinders. One cylinder was not firing, this was prior to the engine getting warm. If you are standing in the boat starting at the transom, this was the bottom left cylinder. Once I finished testing all of these, I went out on the lake. The boat ran fine and I stopped and tested it after driving a while and that same cylinder was showing a consistent light after the engine got warm, so it was firing.
I have already replaced my fuel lines, pump ball, fuel water separator, and connection up to the engine. For some reason, I don't think this is a fuel issue, although sometimes starting cold I have issues getting it to keep running. A little throttle usually does the trick.
I have also started noticing, when getting on plane, the engine just doesn't sound right at mid throttle. It's hard to explain, but I almost feels comparable to driving on ice. The engine is working but the response isn't what you'd expect. When I get up there in throttle (plaining out) the boat runs immaculate.
If anyone can help out with this, I'd appreciate it.
