took out the boat and after about 5 minutes started hearing a wierd noise in the outdrive. then a couple minutes later it tied up. the motor would not even turn over. after waiting about 20 minutes it started back up and i got it back to the dock. this was rebuilt about 6 yrs ago and was the first time taking it out since. any ideas of what might be wrong.

Hard to say without some checking.
Your discription of "Wierd Noise" doesn't help much.
First thing do do would be to drain the gear lube and check for metal on the magnet or in the oil.

i checked the lube and it looked great. the noise was kind of a high pitch squeel but it wasnt steady, just every few seconds . it also felt like it was slipping, the motor would rev but the boat didnt accelerate

Did you check both the upper and lower? Plus the intermediate housing?

Absolutely. Unlike the Merc, the OMC upper and lower are seperate chambers. The intermediate housing is obviously seperate as well.

Sounds to me like you mighta cooked the upper. There is a dipstick on the plug on top of the housing.
