Are there any free repair manuals out there or online for one of these?

Also, still can't find anywhere to put fluid in the lower end. There is a screw where the lower exhaust comes out. There is also a bolt opposite that where the water intake is. But there is not one up high and one low like on "normal" outboards.

Could one of those be it?

Thank you for any info you can give.

Go to www3.sears.com and have your model number handy. You can see parts diagrams there. The gearlube is a thin grease as opposed to a heavy oil. It's more or less permanent. You can't drain it, you have to pop the bottom cap off and dig it out. Then replace with Lubriplate 105. In a pinch I've used CV axle grease mixed with a little gearlube. The seals aren't good enough to hold regular gearlube.

As far as service manual information, I just got one from a new eBay friend. Stay tuned, but this is my busy season and it'll be awhile. In the meantime, you might find some general info at your public library.

my aftermarket manual says outboard gear lube.
Says on models without fill/drain plugs invert motor and remove prop and gearcase cover and fill the cavity with gear lube.
