1980s 15 horse johnson pullstart

Hello,
Im having some trouble with my pull start. You see the spring keeps slipping from the place where it curls around at the outside of the spring housing and i keep having to rewind it, which is not fun. I even tried buying a new one, I wound the spring up, put it in and it only lasted about a month before i had to rewind that one again also. So i really dont like rewinding this spring... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! 8)

If you're saying that the spring raises up out of that retaining slot and malfunctions, spins out, whatever, you've either got a faulty bent spring pan or you're not assembling it properly. I don't see how the spring could possiblycome loose otherwise.
