I have a pair of mid to late 80's 85h.p. Force carbs don't know if they are a matchng set, how can I tell? Will they work for a replacement on a 1989 Force 125h.p. engine? My engine is the maxum series, I think all this amounts to is different stickers on the hood would that be correct? Thanks!

Re: 1980's 85h.p. carb question

There are three carbs on the 85 hp engines. Look at the numbers stamped into the top of the mounting flange. They will either be the same with possibly an "a" and "B" suffix like WB104A and WB 104B --OR-- they will be indexed by one number ie: WB104, WB105, WB106. If this is the case, they are matching. If they have the suffix, usually two are the same and one is different. Sometimes the only difference in the number is to differentiate the carb with the 90 degree inlet (top) and the carbs with the "TEE" inlet (bottom and middle).

HOWEVER: Most, if not all Force 4 cylinder engines, used the TC series carbs. The mounting flange is quite a bit larger than the WB carbs and the venturi is also much larger (1 5/8 vs. 1 5/16). Even if you were to find a set of older Chrysler manifolds (or Force 150 with 3.3125 cylinder bore) that the WB carb would bolt onto, the engine performance would suffer.

That said, some of the 5 cylinder Force 150 hp engines had WB carbs and some had TC carbs. Since the center carb only fed one cylinder, it was different than the top and bottom carbs. --Different number, different air venting, and different jet.

SO for all intents and purposes, (even though it is possible to do) the 85 horse carbs are not interchangeable with the 120-125.
