1980's ]Evinrude 70hp Lower Unit Issues

I just got bought a 1970 silverline 16.5 wityh this motor. The motor runs, but when you put in gear the prop barley moves. but when you shut the motor off you cant move the prop at all. i am a mechanic but not too keen on outboards. any ideas of what i might be getting into?

There are a few different things that could be wrong.First and easiest is your prop hub could be bad.Next does the water pump work?Could be bad splines on your driveshaft and/or crankshaft.Third, could be bad pinion gear in lower unit.
Have you checked the oil in the lower unit for metal? Does the propeller turn if you put it in nuetral?

Just click on the post reply button underneath the message.
You should make sure the shift linkage is moving all the way into gear. If you're sure the linkage is right,then you probably need to remove the lower unit and check the things I mentioned in the previous post.
