took the permanant bolts off my lower until, it lowers a bit, and a little more when in reverse. can not get it to drop down more than roughly a half inch. is there a pin or something you need to remove. i do not see one. It starts good, goes into reverse well and neutral something clunking in forward, perhaps sheared something. Thank you in advance for your help

The shift rod runs up the leg of the motor and connects under the motor. Bolt the foot back up, operate the shifter and look at the moving parts. It should be in the centerline of the motor towards the front. It's a pain to get to without some good socket extensions.

If it is a late 80's motor, the linkage disconnects when you remove the water intake screens. Unscrew the connection, and raise up the upper nut and remove the plastic tapered keeper that is underneath that nut.

Lift the connecting fitting of the top rod. See that plastic part? Make a note of which way the taper goes. The plastic fitting is actually split.... remove it from the shaft, then remove the connector. The rod will now slide out of the lower unit.
