1980's Mercury 50HP 4 CYL. Brass Baffle piece, no one knows what it is. Do you?

What is the purpose of the brass baffle(s) pieces that go into the carb above the float. And how would the motor run without them??

Looking at the diagram, it appears to be located under the float. Perhaps to limit the float from dropping too far

I can't open the web site. The float mechanism is a float, brass bracket, and a needle valve. Some brackets have a tab bent over and as jimmbo said, to limit float movement. Is this necessary, no as floats didn't used to have them; the tab, not the bracket. The bracket connects the float to the needle valve and when it is in the closed position, usually parallel with carb casting the needle valve shuts off fuel from the fuel pump. Can it run with it? The tab yes, the bracket no.

baffles are used to direct the stream of incoming fuel away from the float. This prevents flooding due to excessive weight being added to the float by a stream of fuel landing ontop.

These are slosh baffles,they keep fuel from splashing upward into the vent area when you hit wakes/rollers or hard turns. Without them when fuel is sloshed upward it floods the carb/engine causing a stumble and loss of power. It will run without them if you dont have em....
