I've been looking for a set of Link and Sync instructions for my '81 115 HP Evinrude. My Seloc manual is a little confusing to follow. It also discusses using a timing light--which I don't own or know how to use--yet.

Anyone have a link to a set of instructions or a good, simple set of instructions that can be posted?

How about a photo of a correctly adjusted linkage?

Right now my idle rpm is a little high (1000) and the wot rpm is low (4100). I'm hoping a good rebuild/cleaning of carbs & fuel pump, link and sync, and decarb will get things going properly. Spark and compression are good.

Thanks in advance,

Stephen

The procedure is to long to post and pics won't do any good. What you really need is the OEM manual that will take you through it step by step.

Is the rpms your posting in the water....for idle?

4100 at WOT is very low....either your dropping a cylinder...likely....or your engine set up and prop are way off. I would really work at getting the revs up. A carb cleaning might help but I wouldn't think the carbs are the whole cause unless they are really gummed up. Running at 4100 is really lugging the engine and that block really likes to breath. 5500+ would be more in the ball park.

Another thing to look at is compression. Make sure the cylinders are within 10 > 15% of each other....90+ is considered good on that block.

OutboardJim,

RPMs listed was in the water (at the lake).

I may be off on the 4100 rpm, but I know it was in the low 4000's. I'm also wondering if the tach is correct; it seems at around 4000 rpm the boat is moving much faster than I'm comfortable with.

Compression is 125, 125, 130 & 125.

I'm hoping to eliminate any problems with the carbs and fuel pump to narrow down potential problems with incorrect rpm.

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen...look on the back of the tach....is there a little screw driver slot with some numbers around it? Might be if there is, that the tach is setting on the wrong setting which would cause the tach to read wrong. Take a look and see what you have. The setting for your engine I believe is 6.

OutboardJim--Thanks. I'll take a look tomorrow.

I've only had the boat for a year now--Haven't looked on the back of the tach yet.

How fast do you think an old center console 16 ft tri-hull should move at WOT with that motor?

There are too many variables to really guess at your top speed.

If you do as instructed , and still think the tach is off . Get a tachometer meter and verify your onboard tach .

Or have a mechanic verify it for you.

That is the best way to set your motor up , by rpm's .

Most speedometers are notoriously inaccurate.

GPS, will give true speed.

Yep....what KYHunter said.

If you do need a tach, I would go with a tach from Bomby...your local J/Rude dealer. Their tachs seem to be the most accurate.

But lets' hope it's just the pulse setting that is off.
