1981 115 rude rectifer replacment Gray wire position

I am replacing a regulator on a 1981 Evinrude 115 HP outboard # J115TLCIM. I am trying to figure where the White or gray goes and what it does. I am replacing the rectifer after finding out batt voltage is the same with engine off or running at hi idleI. checked the rectifer and resistance above 2K in both directions on yel to red yel, to ground and the stator yellow wires put out 18 volts , when hooked to a ac volt meter, at fast idle. I have not put on the new rectifer on yet and I wanted to know if this can cause the tach not to work and where the white to gray color wire goes, I cant remember and what does it do. Is the tach signal wire Purple?

Do you have five connections on the terminal block?

If so the gray wire goes to the middle one which is connected to one of the screws adjacent to it. That adjacent screw has the yellow and gray wire from the stator and one of the yellow wires from the rectifier. If the replacement rectifier has a yellow and gray wire it goes here.

The gray wire is the pulse wire for the tach.

White to Gray color wire? have no idea what that means.

The Gray wire leading from the engine wiring harness is the sensor wire that leads to the sensor portion of the tachometer.

That Gray wire would attach to the Yellow/Gray wire at the terminal block.

If no Yellow/Gray wire exists, it would connect to either Yellow wire, however you may need to try both Yellow wires to have the tachometer function.

The gray wire must have faded some. I do have a 5 position mounting board so the gray wire goed to position 3 which has a jumper to the #2 screw. What is the purple wire on terminal 5 for and what function does it play.
