1981 115hp Rude water pump question

once i change the impeller and the impeller housing should i be able to turn the shaft with my hand, it will tum if i put a socket on the splines and turn it but is stiff.

The friction of the water pump makes it difficult to turn by hand. Perfectly normal

thanks Walker, im a novice at this but failry good with my hands so i thought id try it.<br />Another question for you!<br />when reinstalling the lower unit, i know that i put mollylube on the slpines, but not on top of the shaft, should i do anything else before replacing it? any other suggestions would be helpful!

If there is a groovr around the shaft at the bottom of the splines you need to put a rubber o-ring there.

already did it, thanks.<br />should i clean out the rest of the lower unit, or at least rinse it out, i did notice some small particles of sand in there.

A good rinse and/or a squirt or two of high pressure air won't hurt. Don't point the air at seals though.
