Just bought this engine, runs great for $400. The only thing I haven't really been able to figure out, is there are 2 separate bundles of 2 wires coming up from the trim pump, the thick green and blue wires with a plug that has metal prongs in the shape of a T, and then theres the other bundle with 2 smaller black wires coming up also.

What I don't get is on my 225 that has a blown lower, these wires track into the relays which will work with the harness to activate the trim via switch.

The 175 does not appear to have any solenoids or relays for the trim though, the wires just seem to come up into the engine cowling and they are just laying there.

Am I missing a part or is there some harness I need?

small back wire are trim sender wires for a trim guage.

the motor is a direct current motor, when you reverse the polarity on the wires, the motor either runs up or down.
you are missing the relay box.

see diagram here. http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=86d3d72aeba35dacbc349b439cb45104

I agree, it does appear that is what I am missing. The 1987 Johnson 225 I have, uses the same trim pump set up with the reversable polarity, am I assuming correctly that I could take the relay set up from that engine, and rig it onto the 175, I would think it would work If i connected the same blue/green wires from the 175 to where they were going on the 225.

I'm just thinking that it would save me a little in having to buy the relay

The older trim systems like your 81 that use the remote trim solenoid box all use a 3-wire trim motor. The trim motors on the newer engines with the relay box under the cowling use a 2-wire system. They are not compatible systems.
