Ok i found out my 1984 evinrude is actually not its a 1981. It has no coil according to breakdown. It has a new gas tank and gas line was just replaced by me. The cable from the motor to the battery was also replaced as it was not long enough to reach battery location. The gas is new and is 50.1 ratio as recommended. The motor ran like a dream last weekend other then it will not sit and idle on its own. You have to give it gas and rev motor so it wont stall. When full out it sounds perfect and pushes boat well.

Took it out yesterday and started moving along across the lake and it stalled when in full out speed. i noticed that i forgot to open cockpit on the tank as it says to do and unlike older tanks you are suppose to open. Now i open it up start motor first try and start in again. I got about 150 yards and damn thing conked again. Started first try and ran solid in high rev in neutral. let it run to warm up a little. Checked to make sure that the water was coming out from the ports and that the water was not hot. In fact it was cold not even warm coming out of motor. Popped cover and spark plugs are seated properly. i double checked the lower end fluid and such and that is all fine.

I am leaning towards carb needing to be rebuilt or repaired in someway. Or fuel pump. someone mentioned starter but i find that hard to believe as it starts real easy.

I have never rebuilt a carb and willing to give it a shot however i was told it like a timex watch. So little nervous about it. I thought about buying a new card as listed 150.00 or so but no one has one as it is discontinued. Fuel pump is easy to fix and try and inexpensive.

Any suggestions? Am i headed down the right road here?

It sounds like you might have a fuel problem. If you pump the primer bulb when it happens and ithelps, the fuel pump is the problem. If pumping the primer bulb does't help, it sounds like its time to overhaul the carb.

i ordered the kit minus the float. Thinking i should have got the float as well. The fuel pump will be changed as well to be safe. the silenoid was loose from the rings that hold it i found as well. not sure of that would cause anything. anyway the motor did not troll down and stay running so the carb needed to be fixed anyway. I think that after i do all this i probably wont need my electric trolling motor. :>

I'm betting your float will be just fine. I did my carb on my '81 25hp last Fall, and it was the first carb I ever done. I recommend soaking it in carb cleaner, and be sure to remove/replace the core plug.

the thing that bothers me is motor sounded as if it has a skip as i bring up the speed. When it reaches full bore it runs like a dream till now. I am sure hoping this resolves the issue.
