1981 4hp Mercury

Just bought this 4hp Mercury, a 1981 I'm told off C-list as a kicker. Model 54935, Serial 5927863. The motor wasn't run for years so all the gas was removed, tank cleaned and it runs great. It looks almost new. I am assuming it is air cooled as there doesn't appear to be a telltale. Ran it before buying and started right up, after I felt the head and it was luke warm.

Any thoughts?

Any help on identifying the year would be great.

I put in a new water pump last night before I took it on the water. Good thing. The old pump had NO vanes on it. Bits of rubber were packed everywhere. I hope I got it all. Should I be concerned? This motor wasn't run for at least 10 years (could be longer) and when the guy I bought it from ran it, the impeller must have just broke up.

The other issue, I put in a water pump from a single cylinder Merc. It fit fine, so hopefully that isn't an issue. Next job is to change out the LU oil.

Any help on a year would be great.

... i think that kicker you bought looks great, glad you found it was water cooled! that woulda sucked to burn it up. i tried to cross reference your serial number against a site i know but no luck: i think the year sounds about right since the serial falls in that range.

coincidentally , I just picked up a 4.5 Merc bout ur same year. i'll will be doing the maintenance on it once it arrives. hopefully mine will fire like yours did.
