what is the best way to check the ignition system on a 1981 90hp Evinrude?

Are you asking how to trouble shoot a system that has no spark?

The electrical system on that engine has three separate, unique aspects. The charging system, the starting system and the ignition system. A good way to check the ignition system is with an inductive timing light put on each of the 4 plugwires. The flashes from the gun will tell you the quality of spark to each plug. Misses, weak fire, etc.

Thanks a lot. I found a damaged wire under the fly wheel! Now she sounds great but falls flat when I put it in gear and give it a little throttle?? I spliced the damaged wire with some 18awg wire I had but first thing I will do in get new wire. It looks like a thin spark plug wire. Is there something like that that I can buy or do I need to get the factory wires? I will get them if I can but look like they might be hard to find. IDK I am just happy she is running good...in neutral that is.

Are you sure the engine is running on all 4 plugs? That engine will sound fine running on only 3 cyls. You only notice the problem when you put it in gear and find you are down on hp. A better description of the damaged wire would be helpful. What color is the damaged wire?

I was in a hurry last night to test it out and forgot to plug in a different wire after I fixed the damaged one. So long story short you are right it was not running on all 4. But she is now!! had her out running great! Thanks a lot for your help!
