Could a bad starter solenoid on an outboard cause an issue with the engine idling? We were boarding on the ramp with the engine idling and then it suddenly cut. We were able to jump the starter solenoid and had a test light which showed power going in but not heading out. Any help would be appreciated, we are replacing the starter solenoid but are curious as the whether or not that part was the reason the engine cut. If they have no relationship we certainly have a bigger problem on our hands. Thanks

I'm new here and I never get the first reply to a jeopardy question,my odd humor.
I don't think so, when the motor is running the stator takes over, supplying power, the guys below this post will know for sure.. .
Theres a great you-tube video on how to test a starter.solenoid it's very easy.
I think you can hookup a new solenoid wrong.

After the motor is started and the starter is no longer turning, the solenoid does nothing until the next time the key is turned to start. It can't cause any running problems. When you jumped the soleniod, did the motor start?

If you have a portable fuel tank, make sure the vent is open or the vent is clear on an built in tank. It would probably be a good idea to check the compression and spark.

The solenoid only has 1 job.
It supplies power to the starter when the key is turned.
IF? you tested the solenoid while turning the key and it showed no power on the starter side, then it's good your replacing.

The stalling could be ????? Did it restart? More info???

Tom, if you've found a link to a U-tube video that might help?? Post it.
But it sounds like he knows how to test a solenoid??
