I searched...

The carbs on the evi 70 that was given to me are acting up. I have a rebuild kit for all three on the way. It's been sitting for about a year.

When I first got it (after I checked it over) last week It started up fine, idled high, then came down.

I shut it off after about 1 minute because the water pump was not curculating water through the block (new kit on the way also).

After I shut it off, the carbs would flood out. (carb kit...)

THE QUESTION PART:

I took the top carb off to clean / look over. It is exremely clean inside and out. I mean shiney new clean inside the bowl and everything.

HOWEVER.... all the adjustment screws on the carb are IN ALL THE WAY. That aint right is it? It started and ran, and idled just a little bit fast.

Whats up? Why would the screws be full in?

Thanks!

What adjustment screws do you mean? There are no adjustable jets on those carbs.

dunno, maybe someone is trying to mask another problem by running the engine lean , but you may want a jet tool to get those jets out too make sure the get clean when you rebuild...you are going to have to adjust the carbs anyways while you have backpresure on the engine not on a hose one you reinsstall them after the rebuild.. start with the carbs, make you adjustments i believe its 7/8 of a turn out from fully closed, the 1/8 turn increments for adjustment but give a few seconds between turns to let the engine settle out...this will get you going to see if someone masked a problem and you are stuck with it...keep us posted and well help you as much as possible...get a service manual it helps a bunch

If you have idle mix screws on the starboard side of the carbs, there will be a spring behind the screw head.Otherwise, all of the jets including the low speed are fixed. They changed carb designs for the three cylinder loopers around so much it's hard to keep up with which years had what.

Re: 1981 Evinerude 70 Carbs

If you indeed have a 1981 70, with the correct carbs, there are no adjustable jets. However, we dont know for sure what you have unless you post the model number. I'm sure you know what you have so we'll go with that.

When you say "top left" we assume you mean as your looking at it (facing back to the motor) which makes it the starboard side. Again assuming the carbs are for a 1981 70, yes that is a plug that covers a fuel jet for the mid range. The top middle screw is a plug for the idle circuit and there is a jet in there too.

Thank you very much (I am sure its a 1981 70)

Sorry if I wasn't clear on the descriptions. I'm new to this.

The jets are indeed there. I have never used a carb that had a plugs screwed in like these.

You helped a ton!

Thanks

Your discriptions are OK. We just have to be sure of what you have so as not to lead you astray accidently. There are 70 carbs with air jets and some with fuel jets. And some with adjustable jets.

Any jet thats covered is a fuel jet (meters fuel). An uncovered jet is an air jet that meters air. It can be confusing. If your trying to go richer with an air jet you have to go smaller.

Hang in there. You'll get it going just fine.

I'm just impatient. I've got parts and books on the way though. :)
