You guys were a great help several months ago when I was originally trying to get this engine running after about 5 years sitting idle. Since I got it running back then (April I think) it hasn't been started and when I tried starting it today, it won't start.

I have fuel coming out of the carbs when using the choke on the key or the manual choke so I know the carbs are working and I verified that I have compression and spark on all 4 cylinders. When trying to start the engine, I get a bit of smoke (bluish white like it's burning oil) from the two holes in the housing below the power head and I get oil coming from where the prop meets the bottom of the housing. If this was a 4-stroke, I would say that having air, fuel, compression, and spark would be good enough for it to run but I'm not as 2-stroke savvy so if there is anything I should look at, please let me know as I was hoping to get this boat wet tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go to the Engine Won't Start in the FAQ.

Thank you. I've been thru all of that and the engine still won't start. I had thought maybe the oil coming from the prop would be a clue but I don't know what it means.

Is there any way to check the timing without the engine running?? The Clymer manual only states to check it while running but I want to make sure that the timing is correct and not causing my problem. I have a timing light and know how to use it, I just can't find what the timing should be when starting.

As an update, it pops and smokes but refuses to actually start. I've got the throttle in the start position and it cranks forever, but just refuses to start.

Thanks.

Nevermind the timing. I think I found the problem. It appears that my number 2 cylinder only has 30psi compression whereas 3 and 4 have 90psi and 1 has 110psi. The number 2 cylinder is scored and the number 4 cylinder looks like it's been overheated. One and 3 both look excellent.
