Good day all,

I got this great condition upper end motor but the previous owner destroyed the lower end somehow, it was all full of chips. Could it have anything to do with the removal of the shifting detent mechanism?

Is it completely necessary?

I think so. The detent should hold the neutral safety switch also. If the detent is gone, what keeps it fully in gear? The lower should have a detent on the shift dog itself but is it enough?

The parts shown in the picture in post #1 are for the shift interlock. and the neutral start switch.-----It is possible that motor was shifted at too high an RPM without that interlock..-----The neutral shift detent is the spring and 2 balls on the propshaft.----Removal of those interlock items might suggest issues with the motor.----Careful inspection is required.----Tear the lower unit apart for inspection too.
