A few simple questions. . .

1) Squeezing the primmer bulb cuases fuel to pure out of all three carbs... I am going to rebuld the carbs due to sitting for a year anyways, wanted to make sure that this would be fixed also. that wasn't a question, but you know what I mean.

2) Muffs on, will water come out anywhere indicating that the coolant system is circulating if the engine is not running, but the hose is on full?

3) Is it (or how high is) safe to rev with muffs on; out of water?

4) What oil is prefered in lower end?

5) Fuel lin goes into filter, and two lines come out: One splits to each carb, the other goes to the intake manifold downstream of the carbs. Whats that about?

heres the boat that was givin to me:
http://www.lot-o-nothin.com/lotonothin/boat.cfm

Re: 1981 Evinrude 70HP questions.

1- Fuel coming out of the carbs when primer is pumped up indiactes leaky needle valves in float bowl.
2-With the muffs on and water turned on,there will be some water leaking out of the cavity drains and around the muffs, but it isn't circulating throughout the block unless the engines water pump is turning.
3-2500 in or out of gear
4-OMC hi-vis
5-The line going to the downsteam side of the carbs should be exiting from the fuel primer. Not real sure though whether your engine is eqipped with a solenoid primer or an electric solenoid choke,in which case I don't know what the line is you are refering to.

hello
looking at the pics you have a choke.
that fuel pump has one pulse line, line from the bottom of the pump to the bottom of the crankcase. the other line is fuel inlet to the pump, thats on the cap that says filter. the third line goes to the carbs and is teed off. most the old ones had one fuel bowl usually the middle one with a 5/16ths hose and then that carb connects to the other two with 5/32ths hose.
best I can tell you is to purchase a factory service manual for that year and horsepower. some of the aftermarket manuals get confusing cause of the range of models covered.

cool.

The choke is electric, it works when you push the key inwards.

Duuu. it has a fuel pump. I'm used to gravity fed 2 strokes.

thanks !!!

now... whats a good source for a rebuild kit for this? iboats says out of stock for it and the water pump kit.

www.outboardparts.com or youre local evinrude dealer for youre parts

if you really wanna check water flow with motor " off" try this:
1. remove lower unit
2. slide garden hose over the water pickup tube( youll see it)
3. clamp hose with a hose clamp
4. turn on water and see where it comes out

Re: 1981 Evinrude 70HP questions.

I have one of the carbs off now...

if I blow through the fuel line, the air goes through fine. If I flip the carb upside down and blow, it is tight, can't get any air through it.
I'm thinking that the float valves are good, but maybe the float level is incorrect?

carb kits are on the way, as are pump kit and manual.
