1981 Johnson 9.9 overheating

Hi,
I have a 1981 9.9hp johnson that is having a overheating problem.It just had a brand new water pump kit installed.I pulled the thermostat cover off and ran it and nothing came out but a steady stream of air and smoke and a few drops of water.It pumps water out of the outlet hose well also, But after running at idle for two or three minutes I can not put my hand on the top of the head with out being burnt.Any help would be great.

How could you get water out of the telltale and not out of the thermostat housing

It sounds like you have some blockage somewhere. Pull the lower unit off again and flush water up. You should have water coming out the T stat area
