1981 OMC 800 stern drive "clicking going into gear"

When I put it into gear, Forward or Reverse it makes a loud clicking nose as the prop starts to turn but when I bring it back out of gear its silent and smooth.
Keep in mind the outdrive was just rebuilt.

Also is there an adjustment on the tilt for the motor to help slow it down when it's being lowered. It comes up nice and slow with the switch but boy when I lower it drops like a rock. Maybe a bad Tilt switch?

Thanks

I have the same operation with my 1979 OMC 185, seems to be normal.

It's the clutch dog finding a seat in the gear that makes the clicking. Don't hesitate when shifting - do it in a smooth and decisive movement so doesn't click much. You may want to check that your idle isn't set to high too. I think it should be around 600-700.

There is no adjustment or fix for the drive going down fast. Just tap the switch a couple of times until it gets all the way down rather than holding it until it clunks.
