I pulled out some points on an OMC 3.8 v-6 and not sure how they go back in now. they are getting ground out and boat wont start. voltage drops to 4.5 volts at pos side of coil when connect wire. I inclulded a couple of pictures maybe someone can tell me what i'm doing wrong?

probably got a bad condensor...... it happens.
you need a dwell meter to set those..... hope you got one.
if not they can be had at sears for 30 bucks.

Re: 1981 OMC points installation?

just ordered a new OTC last one got burned up while checking something over 10 amps, verified rpm on tach. pulled points and cleaned till others on order came in. put them back in and boat would not start. i thought that condenser went bad because it was testing a continuity on dist body, points, neg coil wire and condenser. after doing all that i remember i had another engine that i could check too. will fix after football game tomorrow. thanks for the help.

Are you measuring the voltage at the coil with the points open or closed? Of course the coil gets grounded with the points closed...that is the purpose of the points.

And I will ask the same question as the other poster...what is your dwell?
