Back to work on my POS 1981 wellcraft with OMC 800, 350Chevy . I took it to the lake once last summer and due to lack of maintenance by the previous owner the bearing went out on the horizontal shaft in the upper gearcase. It literally welded the bearing to the shaft, my puller wouldn't pull it, my press wouldnt press it, so I torched it in one spots, still no luck, torched it again and had to beat the race off it little chunks. Shaft needs major polishing now, but thats not the problem.
problem is the top bearing on the vertical shaft is out too, and the water pump shafts are very worn out, like the teeth are gone.
So, does anyone know of a way to rig the shafts up or a place I can get some used shafts cheap, or the whole water pump assembly? I'm done spending money on this thing. Looks like someone put a new water pump in not long ago and ignored that the shafts were shot.
The lower units seems to be in fine condition, also has a new shift cable in it. I swapped the motor last fall, and repaired the rotted stringers. But this thing seems to be a never ending pit. Its still a pile of junk. I'm wondering if it would be better to find a newer boat with a blown motor and just swap mine in. My wife gets pissed everytime I spend a dime on this pile or even an hour in the shop with it.
