1981 Rinker 17 foot I/O open bow loose steering

The steering on my 1981 17 foot open bow has been getting worse and worse over the last few years. The steering wheel has significant slop back and forth and the play seems to be coming from inside what I believe to be the rack and pinion under the wheel. I was wondering if there was any way to tighten up this play or do I need a whole new rack/ pinion and steering cable. Any input would be appreciated.

If the rack and pinion are sloppy, you need a new helm and cable

Are you sure you are not fighting V-hull wander?
