1982 200HP Carby Shift problem lower unit

G'day to all,

Changed water pump on my merc on the weekend, and now seem to have a shift issue. Standing behind the boat looking at the motor, when forward is selected at the helm which way should the prop spin? Mine spins anti clockwise which I believe is wrong, but dropped the lower a few times and seems to go back in the same way? Question is can you get it wrong at the lower leg?

In foward the prop should spin clockwise, with a racheting sound. I recommend you drom the LU, put the control into neutral, set the LU into neutral and re install. Make sure the lower shift shaft mates with the upper shift shaft. You can usually see them mate if you look down the hollow lower steering yoke
