I rebuilt the carb., replaced all the fuel lines, new plugs, and this motor won't stay running! Fuel tank vent open, ball gets hard, will start, but cannot seem to adjust the high speed needle (there isn't a low speed needle)? A month or so of working on this, and now fishing season is here, am at MY WITS END...any ideas? I see so many threads on Johnson carb issues...Why?

Well, this motor doesn't have a high speed need. It is infact a low speed needle. A good starting point to set it, is about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated. Also, try setting the tank up higher than the power head (like on a five gallon bucket or something) and see if it stays running. It's possible that the fuel pump is weak and not keeping the fuel flow good.

At first light, I'll try both of your suggestions, Commander. Thanks!! :)

QL77JC4 or QL82C Champion plugs gapped to .030"? If your using L78V surface gap plugs, replace 'em and use QL77JC4's. Do a proper spark test and compression test to count them out. If you run out of plausible ideas, you could check your reed plate and make sure the leaf valves are seating properly. Are you positive you have fresh fuel mixed 50/1?

I put two new QL77JC4 plugs in yesterday. I raised the tank, but that was not the problem. I turned the needle out both 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 turns, but am having the same problems. I can get it to idle, then it begins to miss, and dies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a screen in the pickup line of the fuel tank??

Had a similar issue with my old tank, bought a new one because the old one was really faded and leaky, took the old one apart to find a ton of crap plugging up the screen inside.

Just for giggles, I cleaned everything out and tried the old tank again and she ran as good as new.

At least I now have a spare tank though...LOL.

Rscholar, I have the same thing going on with a 35 hp 81 model and have not been able to figure it out. Tomorrow I am going to take a look at the intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets and by pass gaskets. Seems like mine is running out of gas. Can you choke yours and get it to run or take a spray bottle of fuel mix and spray in the carb and get it to run? If it is a fuel pump you can just pump your bulb and it will keep it running. Good luck. Seen several of these 25 and 35's with pretty much this same problem. Carried mine to the mechanic last week and he checked it out and said he was stumped, has one doing the same thing he traded for that does not run.

Choking starts it, but doesn't help keeping it running!! :(

Here is a pic of the carb.
Number 36 needle must be sharp with no grooves or bends, it must not wobble any when rolled on a flat surface. When cleaning the carb, #4 & 5 plugs need to be removed and passages thoroughly cleaned, this is the low speed section of the carb. Retainer #28 needs to be in good shape, or it will let air into the low speed circuit.

Added Note: On older motors, if the crank shaft seals are leaking air the motor will have difficulty idling. Unfortunatly, the task of seal replacement is quite a bit more work.

Does pumping the fuel primer bulb make any difference? If it does, suspect a failing fuel pump.

Did you manually clean the brass high speed jet that is located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber.... in back of the drain screw/bolt? If not, do so with a piece of single strand steel wire. Solvent just doesn't clean that jet properly.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note 1: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

Note 2: If the engine should be a three (3) cylinder engine with three (3) carburetors, start the adjustment sequence with the center carburetor.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thanks for all your help! I've had it, though, and made an appointment with a marine mechanic. Will let you know what he does/does not find.

Re: 1982 25 HP Johnson: AT WITS END!

Marine mechanic, again rebuilt my carb., said I was missing one gasket, now it runs great, but need to replace impeller...running hot at idle. Went fishing today, but water was rooster tailing over the transom. My cavitation plate is about 1 1/2 inches below the transom, should I raise the motor? I ordered a hydrofoil for better plaining, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Raise the engine so that the cavitation plate is approximately 3/4" below the bottom of the boat at the transom, but no lower than 1".
