1982 25 hp johnson outboard

i have resently come into a 1982 25hp johnson outboard motor. the lower gearbox on this motor is shot. can anyone tell me which year model and hp range will interchange with this engine. i know where i can get a 35 hp motor will this work?<br />thanks for any help

Does your 25hp have thru-hub exhaust at the prop?I'm not positive but i think it was around 85 when the 20-30hp engines came with it.I was told the 35hp was the only one that had it prior to that.I'm sure someone will chime in here to lead you in the right direction.
