I've owned and worked on Johnson/Evinrudes all my life. A friend has asked me to replace the impeller on his 1982 25Hp Merc. I've removed the four bolts that hold the gearcase to the exhaust housing, but can't figure out how to disconnect the shift linkage. I can see where the shift linkage connects to the cam near the front of the power head, but don't see how to disconnect it. The cam appears to be pinned to the shift linkage shaft but I don't see any way to remove the pin. The cam appears to be connected to the shift mechanism with a sort of C-clip, but I don't see how removing this would allow the lower unit to drop down unless the cam stays attached to the shift linkage and can pass through the exhaust housing. This is very different from any Johnnyrude I've ever worked on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1982 25HP impeller replacement

on my 9.9hp I had to remove the bolts attaching lower unit to the exhaust housing and it allows it to drop down about 2 inches if I put the motor in reverse. Once its dropped down enough you barely have enough room to slip a wrench up in unbolt the water pump from the lower unit. once you unbolt the water pump the lower unit drops out. The shift shaft stays attached. there is a little C clip under the water pump on the shift shaft that you can remove and the water pump and drive shaft will pull out of the motor. On the bottom end of the shift shaft there is a threaded tapered piece, if you remove this make sure to count the amount of turns to remove for when replacing.
