Hello, I have a 82 omc 800 not sure if its a stinger or cobra but my problem is that it will not go into gear. I had it on the lake and when i was moveing it felt as if the prop fell off. engine runs great and the cable shift in the back of the boat goes into forward and reverse but there is no response in the lower end. no clunking into gear. also i have the boat out of the water and i can put the drive into gear and turn the prop by hand forward and back it does have some resantiance like gears are stripped. but spins freely in netrual. could it just be a cable broke or is a shaft or gears broke? any help would be great.

Welcome to Iboats!

You will have to disassemble the shift adapter and see what the cable looks like there. If all looks well there, you will have to pull the drive and and take it down to the lower unit to inspect the cable there.

At any rate, you will need the manual to do the job right.

Also would that be the only thing or could there be a bigger problem? Like gears or a prop shaft maybe?

its probably the impeller shaft..they are good for stripping out, leaving you with a boat that wont move and will overheat...a bad shift cable will not cause drive to come out of gear..either way drive needs to removed and inspected..a shop manual would be good to have, and unless you are mechanically inclined, I would leave it to a pro....just my opinion

OK yeah i have only removed a few parts on it and looked at what i could without screwing it up to much. i didnt find any metal in the gear boxes when i dumped them. So i think i will take the advice and take it to someone with a little more knowledge than myself.

If you were not having a overheat problem, and there was no metal on the drain screws, then most likely you have a screwed up shift cable or mechanisim.

Early '82s had '81 drive hung on them too... you could possibly have a hydro-assisted lower unit. They had problems with a filter screen plugging up and that would cause shifting issues.

At any rate... if you lack confidence to do it yourself, take it to a pro... This unit is an expensive fix if you do something to screw it up more.
