I have a 1982 35hp Johnson Outboard. I bought it used. It only runs with the choke almost completely closed and even then it doesn't get full power. I completely rebuilt the carborator per the suggestion of several of you guys. After a complete cleaning and rebuild, it runs the same. If I hold the choke almost complete closed it gets near full power but if I open the choke it dies immediately. New plugs also. Any ideas? I also replaced all fuel lines and hose clamps.

Did you try a compression check? First thing on a 2 cycle.

I haven't yet. For one day before it started running real badly it started runnibg great, full power, planed the boat out great, then it started running bad. So apparently you think it's compression. The only reason I didn't is that it seemed to change.

OK, did you remove and clean the high speed orfice plug in the bottom of the carburetor? Sounds like you didn't. It must be absolutely positively squeeky CLEAN. Even a tiny bit of coating in the orfice will make it require choking to run. It is deep in the hole behind the hex headed plug in the carb bottom. You need a special screwdriver to get it out. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/frankr_photos/FixedJetScrewdriver2.jpg?t=1192928654

Ok, I made the special tool as you guys said and removed that brass fitting. It looked moore like a sleeve than a high speed orfice plug, I mean it has a hole like 1/8" all the way through it. It looked like something was missing. I did clean it though. Also, the needle valve on top of the carb has no effect. I can screw it all the way in or out and I can't tell anything different as to how the engine runs. Is it for idle?

Good Grief! No wonder it won't run. Your motor takes a part number 319831 orfice plug which is .059" inside diameter at the orfice end. It should be stamped 59D. The D means something but I don't remember what. Maybe the shape of the orfice hole?

Closely related to this is the gasket around the main nozzle. This is around the center part of the carburetor float bowl where it meets the main carb casting. If the gasket is leaking or missing, it will upset the fuel flow through the orfice plug. The gasket is part number 316332

The knob is to adjust the slow speed (idle) mixture. The high speed mixture is controlled by the orfice plug. You can't adjust the idle until you get the high speed straightened out. Even then, the motor has to be running at idle speed for the adjustment to have any effect.

Yes, that looks like the part. Does it have a insert inside it that might have come out or did somedody have to have drilled it out? I swear the hole is close to 1/8" diameter.

Thanks for the help, I'll get a new one and see what happens.

Somebody went berserk with a drill. They probably figured that would make a 50 horsepower out of it. It doesn't work that way, does it? That hole is precision sized. .059". not .058" or .060".
