This motor is auxilary power on a sailboat. When I put in fwd at high throttle it will not stay at that throttle setting as the throttle grip is not stiff enough. Is there some sort of adjustment so that it will stay at whatever throttle level I have set when I am no longeer holding the handle?

Re: 1982 4.5 Johnson - throttle too loose

I have the same problem with an '84 6hp. tends to be Ok at high throttle openings but wont stay put in the mid range where i mostly use it.

The 8hp has a clamp on the throttle grip which I think could be fitted to mine and possibly your 4.5 as well but I have overcome the problem by fitting a thin fibre washer on a pivot point in the throttle linkages. I cannot find a diagram of the linkages on the 4.5 but on mine its the pivot for part #39 that I have stiffened up. See THIS DIAGRAM
Not a perfect solution ( the twist grip clamp would be that) but maybe you could do something similar if there is a similar pivoting lever.
