I'm looking at a 1982 70hp merc. I currently have a 1973 50hp evinrude and It has been awesome. is there any way the merc will give me headaches. I am only used to working on Jonnyrudes.

It doesn't matter which engine or manufacturer you have, it depends on if the motor was taken care of. Thats a good motor and will give you many hours of fun if you take care of it the way you took care of your Rude.

Those mid-70's to late 80's 3 cylinder Mercs are full of headaches. Crappy wiring that frays and corrodes, powerpacks and rectifiers that blow frequently, two carbs unevenly feeding three cylinders, water jacket leaks, can't replace tired reeds without complete disassemble, reverse lock cam headaches...stop me whenever, I can go on and on!

That said, my 1978's still running, and I've run it 90% in saltwater for 8 years now.

Thats what I wanted to hear before I jump on it. It seemed too good to be true. I think I'll stay with my old dog.

Never seen a tired reed :) This is a good engine as it has the copper wiring harness and Johnrudes suffer the electrical problems of failed rectifiers and packs. If it does not have trim its suffers a little due to tilt pin positions. This motor is only 60hp at prop and also suffers alittle bit in performance due to the smaller diameter gearcase and prop.

I have had a 78 70HP for 3 years, which I believe is very close in design to the 82. I picked it up cheap and after getting it running right, have put over 200 hours on it without a problem. Runs well and idles well. Picked up another one off craiglist for parts, but haven't needed any.

Ive had a 82' Mariner 70HP for almost 20 years now and i've never had any problems with it. I've done the maintence but its just basic stuff like fluid changes and impellers. Its a great motor I would say buy it if it looks like its been taken care of. They run very smooth and quiet and are pretty good on fuel. They also have a great power to weight ratio. I would buy mine again.
