1982/83 Evinrude 20 hp.Have to prime tostart when cold.

Hey Guys

The old man has a 82/83 evinrude 20, that will not start unless its manually primed. Once the engine is warm it will start fine.A check of the spark plugs after attempts to start from cold show plugs as being dry. Could this be a compression issue, a fuel pump issue or Carb issue?

frostmonkey....All engines need to be primed and choked to start when they are cold, does it start easily when cold or hard?

What do you mean "manually primed"?

This engine doesn't have a electric primer, just a manual choke.By manual priming I mean physically squirting a small amount of fuel in through the throat of the cabureator. With out doing this the engine will not start when its cold.However once the engine warms up aparently it starts with ease, and will idle no problem.

Its not a fuel pump or compression issue. Must be carb related.

Are you sure it has a choke and not a manual primer? The 20's switched to a manual primer sometime in the early 80's. If it has a choke then it sounds like you need to clean the carb. The plugs should only be wet if its flooding. You obviously aren't flooding since you need extra gas to get started. If its a manual primer you need 3-5 primes and then try to pull it over.

I just checked the BRP site and they don't show a 20 hp being built in 1982/83. Since I know they did in fact make them I am 99% sure you have a choke and not a primer.

are you pumping the hose bulb until hard, also is the arrow on the bulb pointing toward the motor. if not the motor has no gas to start.
