I have a 1982 9.9 evinrude. I did just replaced the water pump and I am getting a good stream of water out of the pee hole. I have also removed the thermostat(it was hammered) and bought a new one today and will be putting it in this evening. My questions are :
#1 does the engine have a freeze plug ? ( I took out the thing that looked like a freeze plug but looks like it just the model # on it and nothing under it).
#2 After running it for about 10 minutes the water coming out of the pee hole seems too hot to me. I can leave my hand in the water(coming out of pee hole) but that?s about as hot as I can stand. Is this too hot ?

1) No, that is not a freeze plug, the manufacturer puts that there for engine ID purposes, put it back. There are no freeze plugs in the block because when you shut the engine off the block will drain all the water out.
2) Water coming out of the tell-tale is directly from the pump and normally should not be hot. How is the temp on the cylinder head, can you hold your hand on it for 3-4 seconds? Are you running it in a barrel or on the hose?

Running it in the barrel it does NOT get hot. Running down the creek(under a load 10 min) is when it gets hot. I can put my hand on the head for a few seconds but thats all.

Bought it used but I live near galveston bay so I would guest yes on saltwater. Now I did blast water threw the water tube while I had the lower unit off replacing the water pump because I could not blow thew it with 60 lbs of air. Cranked it up to over 100lbs of air and POW something blew out(had the water cover off of head) and then I was able to blow thew it. Also I blasted water in the water tube using my preasure washer and all seemed clear.

Keep an eye on it but if you can hold your hand on the powerhead for a few seconds it is probably OK. The water out the tell tale should also be pretty hot. I doubt I would want to shower in it. It should be around 145F

this is the BIBLE on all things Johnson 9.9 to 15 HP, Leroy is amazing................ i am wondering on the upper rubber gasket the pipe goes into, and possible jacket blockage, although with a serious air gun blow through, that should have helped tons........... thermostat is important to have in there, but remember, not much comes out the rear exhaust, until it opens............. if all else fails, Leroy explains how to install a tell tale in her, worked wonders in my 15 for peace of mind ............ he is also a member and chimes in from time to time

The tell tale water will be hotter (If the thermostat is in) & before the thermostat opens, & the flow will be slightly more as the termostat is blocking total flow out of the motor until it opens. As for how hot this water will be, it may be different with each motor, all of my motors I can hold my hand in the stream, it is pretty warm, but not hot.

Also it makes a difference in your occupation as to what is hot to you. If you are a desk jockey, your hands will not take the heat that a farmer, mechanic, construction worker or anyone who works with their hands & has thicker skin there.

If salt encrusted inside the water passages, this could possibly insulate the passages & maybe allow it to run hotter, but the hand on the block behind the flywheel has been pretty well the standard test for years.

To check for salt build up inside the block, pull the head & you can see the water passages around the cylinders, clean them out if need be.
