Hi all, Newbie to this board and to outboards in general. Picked up a 1982 Gamefisher 9.9 (217.586251) and was just starting to get it going this past week. Tonite I changed out the gear oil and replaced with fresh. After this I turned the flywheel by hand. I also made the mistake of putting it in gear and turning it. Did both forward and reverse. At first it stuck in reverse and would not shift out. Now I have it back in neutral but dont know what I did. The prop did turn as I rotated the flywheel by hand. Just need to know if this is an indexing problem or something more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1982 9.9 Gamefisher shift problem

The clutch dog is difficult to shift when the motor is not running. It has 2 cogs that match with the cogs on the forward and reverse gears. When in gear the prop will rotate freely about 1/4 turn by hand.If you rotate the flywheel as you shift it will be easier to shift.

Thanks Spike. Just got all my cab parts in today and will give it a start tomorrow. Hopefully that will be all I need to do.
