We pulled the cylinder head cover off to access the thermostat.... found it locally at NAPA.... which is great.

But i see another hole!!!
15 0317653
Add to pick list VALVE, Pressure relief 1 7
16 0315626
Add to pick list SPRING, Valve 1 4
17 0315538
Add to pick list GASKET, Cover to head

these are the three parts that are missing out of that hole. it was empty

The question is: What do they do? Is this a fail safe of some sorts? in case thermostat fails?
I cannot imagine too much pressure building in there....

the problem i am having, is that the engine stays cold.

thanks in advance.

with those parts not in there.... i seems to me that the thermostat will not work, regardless of the condition of the thermostat.

this poor motor has had quite a few hands on it i am finding. LOL

You found the pressure relief valve I think. It bypasses the thermostat at high pressures (WOT and the like). w/o it your engine will be running too cold at idle-mid.

yep... pressure relief valve.

i thought it might be bad that it is missing.

so that is a big part of my problem with this thing dieing at low idle.
got a bad coil too.... so i thought i had it knocked out.

thanks. i guess i will be ordering parts tomorrow. napa will not have that stuf local.

You'll be wanting to do a serious decarb once you get that all together too. Running cold like that will build up lots of crud.

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

this is the way i like to decarb

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

afterwards recheck compression.

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

i should have posted the full history....
we just rebuilt this. noticed the thermostat was bad, but didnt have the part. we stuck it back together and tried it. running cold.
has less than an hour on new piston and rings.

thanks for the proactive responses though.

one more thing, the timing advance seems a little stiff. is this normal?
is there a place to oil/grease? or any part you guys think may be gunked up that needs to be cleaned?
i have a flywheel puller.

anyone ever had one of these engines 'runaway' on you?

pulled both plug wires and it kept going. i had to choke it to kill it....

That's why you don't push it over 2k in a barrel or on the muffs. It's a great way to toast a powerhead.

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

it's in a barrel.... still spitting and sputtering at low idle.

we made a pressure relief valve.... and it gets warm now, thankfully.

runs out pretty good at WOT, but sits there and spits, sputters and bucks.

would a lower crank shaft seal cause this? is it sucking air?

i guess i should confess now that i am running carbon plug wires. i couldnt find any 'wire wires'.... will get those this week.

new plugs

good coils

we hooked it up with timing light and it holds steady on tdc at idle.

help

thanks.... you guys have been great

yes, but we read that you have to run it up to 3500 to check advance with timing light.
conundrum, i guess.

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

You need to be on the boat in the water, or running in baffled test tank in order to set the high timing by the method in the manual. There is an alternate method, however.

I'll see if I can find the thread where its explained.

I see it's now in the FAQ

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

Thanks wombat.
me and the mechanic(Dad) will go over that.

My original question about crank case seals:
Dad thinks that we may have a leak there.... causing the engine to suck air instead of gas.... causing my backfires at idle. any thoughts on that?
I may just order the gaskety set.... it comes in a kit, si I hope it has everything.

Re: 1982 Evinrude 60hp question

Let's try some tests first before pulling the powerhead.

Put your fingers in the throat of the carbs, see if this stops the spitting n sputtering.

This will richen up the fuel air mixture and also help tell you what carb may be causing the miss/sputtering.

Yes you do need the solid wires for sparkplug wires.

If the sputtering does not stop by putting fingers in throat of carbs then look at link n sync, I believe you should be a few degrees advanced at idle, not at TDC, check your manual for specs.
