Working on a 35hp '82 Evinrude. Symptom - was running hot. I pulled the lower unit and found most everything messed up. O rings and rubber gaskets missing. Seeing this made me quite sure that a waterpumpecktomy would make her purr. Carefully installed all new parts and she cooled great for about 10 minutes. Strong Pee Stream got warm the hot quite quickly, (One or two minutes) Plenty of pee stream and water occasionally from those relief ports.

Then steam from the pee hole and she got hot to the touch. I shut her down. I'm wondering what to do next. I look at those rusted little bolts holding the cooling cover on the head and wish I was back in Kentucky where there ain't no saltwater.

Should I try to get those little bolts out or go on and take the head off first. I'm thinking thermostat is the problem and the way to get to it is removing those little rusty bolts. In a saltwater engine, will the head bolts be less likely to break than the cooling cover bolts.

I'm not a newbie, just changed my "Handle" and password to something I can remember!
