The engine will turn over until the battery runs down but there's no spark. Thus far I have ruled out:
the kill switch...The boat does not one.
fuel feed
the 20 barrel fuse.

The last test I ran was jumping the starter while the large red cannon plug was disconnected. This gave a solid spark.

So, what could be grounding it out downstream of the plug? Voltage regulator? What do I test next?

Well, for sure your problem is forward of the cannon plug. Mark all the wires to the ignition switch and take them all off and keep them from touching anything or each other. Now jump straight to the starter. If you have spark, you probably either have a bad switch or had it wired wrong, and yes, new switches can be bad.

Wiring harness from control box. Anyone know if this year model has a neutral safety switch? Not near my manuals now.

The black/yellow wire leading from the ignition switch to the powerpack(s) is the kill circuit lead.

Disconnect that lead at the powerpack(s) and hook up a ohm meter between one of the black/yellow wires and a powerhead ground.

At the ignition switch, the black/yellow wire whould be connected to the "M" terminal that has a raised tower. A black lead should be connected to the other "M" terminal and lead to a ground.

With the ignition switch in the OFF position, you should obtain a reading from the ohm meter.

With the ignition switch in the ON position, you should get no reading at all.

That should lead you in the right direction to correct that problem.

Re: 1982 Evinrude e90tl w/ no spark

Thanks Joe

I found a plug with a black/yellow wire that appeared to go to the powerpack (bluebox?). I unplugged it and got an ohm meter reading w/ the ignition off and nothing when on.

I then checked the ignition switch to verify that I correctly landed the black/yellow on the raised 'M' terminal, which it was. When I dismantling the control box, I noticed 2 things that I had not paid attention to previously. One was a nickel size opening adjacent the ignition switch. It had washer marks as if from a (kill?) switch that is no longer there.

Is this where the '81 era OMC control boxes placed the kill switch?

The other thing was a black wire near the opening that I grounded to the control box. When I installed the new ignition switch, I noticed this severed wire hanging loose from the wire harness with its other end crimped in a hoop that was screwed to the control box housing. Thinking it had broken, I reconnected it. Rolling it over, I saw it was black/yellow....and was grounding out the engine.

I disconnect it, turned the ignition, and it popped immediately.

So, Where do I find a '81 era OMC kill switch?

Oh yeah, I also need a motor pin for the steering cable and possibly a new cable for an '81 ssv 151 Glastron. Any suggestions?

Thanks a million. Resolution is bliss!
