I picked up a 1982 35hp Evinrude a few days ago and the first trip on the lake with it it did not seem like it was getting full power almost like it was over propped. A few minutes later it started running like a complete dog sputtering and spitting at anything above throttle. Have checked the usual suspects:
Rebuilt carb....(soaked, sprayed, replaced all parts including float).
Good compression 120 on upper 118 on lower.
Good spark. Jumps 3/4" gap on tester with a nice snap and bright blue.
That being said i replaced the plugs and wires just in case. Swapped coils and CDI from known good motor. So I started ripping in to it farther and was suspecting something got wedged in the reeds some how. When I got the manifold cover off I noticed that there was a section blown out between the reed on the left (from the front) and the "Valve Drain" per Evinrudes parts diagram. This leads to a tube that runs back to the cover on the crankcase.
Number 9 in the picture. I guess the question is what is this "bypass" for and would this little blow out cause it to run that rough?
