Hello all,

In advance, I see how helpful you all are in other posts and I really appreciate any advice I may get on my problem. I have a 1983 bass tracker with a 60 HP 2-Stroke Evinrude. To my knowledge, everything is original 1983.

My power trim has slowly become unresponsive when I trim up. I works when I hit the trim down button and I hear a click both ways. I have read to troubleshoot by switching the relays to see if it reverses the issue. I can't find the relays! Can anyone give me a little insight on what I may need to do to get this trim back and working?

Thank you very much.

My engine model # is
E60ELCTB

When I follow the wiring from the trim motor; It goes to the battery where I can see a red/black/blue/green/yellow wiring harness. The red and black jump to the battery and the remaining 3 go straight to the throttle and trim remote control by the steering wheel. the yellow jumps off to the trim gauge on the console. I can't find the black box that supposedly holds the relays..

its under the engine cover

I checked thoroughly and the only things that come close to a relay is the ignition coils and the power pack. Other than that, there are no wires beneath the engine cover. Is it possible there are no relays for such an early model?

Re: 1982 Evinrude Power Trim - Doesn't trim up but works down

I did make a breakthrough. I know the trim motor works and I know what I can do to get out of a bind on the water.

I have 3 splices with connectors in the trim wiring - red(power)/blue(up)/green(down) - between the battery and the trim control switch on my throttle, I essentially jumped both the green and blue wire with a 12 volt hard wire from the battery that would bypass the switch. I can get the motor to go both up and down.

At this point, I have to believe the problem is in the trim switch or within my control.
Would anyone have any further recommendations to what the problem might be inside that control?

I know I could add a 2-way switch on my console that would take the place of the existing one, but if it wouldn't be too expensive I would like to keep it set up the way it should be.

Thanks again for any insight.

I should also mention the trim gauge has recently gone out.

I just read in a related article that the trim sender could be bad. Is the trim sender located in that black box I cannot seem to find?

Thanks.

Re: 1982 Evinrude Power Trim - Doesn't trim up but works down

Please I would appreciate any insight!

I have continued to troubleshoot my trim control and have made a few conclusions, but I am still stumped to the issue.

I have found that the trim does work up and down, but it only goes back up if I switch the blue/blue and green/green to blue/green and green/blue. The trim switch will only activate the motor pressing down on the switch. With the wires correct it goes down and when swapped, it goes up. I do not have relays!

You would think the switch is bad. But the kicker is that when I use a volt meter to check the voltage coming back out of the switch, both the green (when pressing switch down) and blue (pressing switch up) wires transmit 12.63 volts exactly.

Please help, if I am getting 12.63 volts out of both wires, why will only switch pressed down make the motor activate?

I cannot seem to find out whether I have a trim sender or trim limit sensor, the gauge has stopped working coincidentally when the trim up started to really give me trouble

Again, anyone, I really appreciate your help!
