bought outboard locally from individual. mounted on boat and took to ar. river. engine ran good for about 45 minutes, sat and fished for a while. started engine and it ran for about 1 minute and died like it ran out of gas, pumped bulb up tight again and same thing, limped back to launch ramp and trailered. a week later hooked up water muffs and started engine did same thing. checked screen at fuel pump and cleaned, same thing. replaced fuel, line from tank to engine, tried different tank with vented cap. installed hose clamps on fuel lines, engine stays running if you keep bulb pumped up, fuel pump looks good, ie no tears in diaphram. what gives? thanks for any input!

Looks can be decieving.Disconnect the outlet hose of the fuel pump and route into a suitable container and have someone crank the engine while you monitor its output.Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me.Another possibility is sticky float valves in carbs.

replaced fuel pump/ let me say i installed a pump off a 1971 fifty horse johnson, its not a year old. it had 2 ports, an inlet from tank and outlet i guess went to other carb or bypass. i capped it off and it did the same thing, dies. don't want to spend $60.00 on fuel pump and just be throwing money away.

wooley,

The kit to rebuild the pump is far less than $60.00

wooley,

The primer bulb is part of the fuel hose. It is somewhere between the tank and the engine fitting, on the hose.

The primer bulb will not stay rock hard while the engine is running, but it should remain firm.

Here's a thought. Look a the primer bulb. It should have an arrow on it showing the direction of fuel flow (arrown pointing away from tank toward engine) . Is yours installed backwards???

replie to djohn19, it is pointed in the correct position. just weird these outboards seem to run fine and start fine right before you go to use them.

The only way the primer solenoid could pose a problem if its lever is in the run position is if the seal on the lever shaft was allowing air to be sucked in or losing fuel.

My guess is that you've got a sticking carburetor float needle valve thats keeping the bowl from refilling with fuel. Try rapping the carb bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver. Sometimes this frees them up. It sounds like a carb rebuild is going to be needed.

Hi wooley

As Jack pointed out, more than likely a sticking needle valve or clogged passages in the carb.

Get a carb rebuild kit, relatively cheap, tear the carb down, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out the passages with compressed air, reassemble and hopefully, you're done.

In fact, crud in a carb is so common, I would have done that before replacing fuel hoses etc.

As soon as you have some time, replace the water pump/impellor and lower unit oil.

Is the vacuum hose that drives the pump leaking?

There's another hose, running from the fuel pump to the crankcase. The fuel pump runs off pulses in crankcase vacuum. Does that second hose look OK?
