I am attempting to rebuild my lower unit and I have been having a ridiculous time with this thing so far. After literally 2 weeks of trying to get the bearing carrier out, it finally popped when I put a 2 ton bottle jack on it, bottom of it against the castle nut(and prop shaft end) and chains attached to eye hooks threaded into the 5/16" holes, maxed out the jack and had a torch on the housing...BOOM...the carrier came out intact! Some real redneck engineering going on in this garage tonight.
Anyway, I got into it a little more and started pulling the retaining clips inside, first one...no major problems, second one...THE EAR SNAPPED OFF about an inch from the end! It looks like it was due to an old stress crack because the break is not new except for a very tiny portion where it was still stuck together. Anywhooo, I'm up a creek right now because those clips are pretty deep in there and I don't want to mar the o-ring seat for the bearing carrier, so I'm not sure what to do exactly. These clips are no joke either...they're tough to squeeze.
I'd appreciate any input. I'll get some pics posted in a bit. Thank you in advance.
