I have a new to me merc 40. The engine is clean and runs strong, but it's a b@$% to start. If I start it in my driveway on the hose it doesn't need any choke or anything, just pump the bulb and turn the key and she fires up. Once int he lake, it will crank and crank and crank and then come alive. I have no idea why. Carb is clean, filters are clean, bulb is new.....

I maybe don't know the sequence of starting it like - prime bulb, choke, depress electric choke and then turn key. I'm afraid I'm flooding it or something.

I know this is a newbie post but I've had over 20 boats and this motor is driving me nuts. Even after it's running and warmed up it's hard to start. Any ideas?

Have the fuel lines been replaced? I would check the lines and the fuel pump. If you haven't rebuilt it yet, I would either do that or clean it thoroughly. Also, maybe check your plugs. They could be fouling
