I recently purchased a used 1982 Mercury 50 BLueband but it will not start. The motor is turning over and fuel supply is good, but there is no spark on ANY plugs. As I am new to outboards I would like to know what to check next if no spark is present.
Thanks for any help you can give
Dunk

Possible stator problem. Stator is under your flywheel.
Keep an eye on this post, another mechanic may have more advise.

I would suspect the powerpack...given that you should have 2 blue leads comming from the stator. Its not common to lose both of them at once.

Blue leads supply the power to the powerpack for low speed.

Check them for some voltage. If you have any voltage there...you should have some spark.

If you do have voltage the powerpack will most likely be to blame for no spark.

TMD

Thanks for your help so far. Where should i be looking for the powerpack? I dont have any refernce to it in the manual or on the wiring diagram, is it part of the stator?

Itis a Type V ignition system - Thunderbolt - flywheel CD pointless - coil per cyl - electric start
Thanks once again for any help

hello
Look for a switchbox in your manual. also make sure some one has not installed an emergency stop switch and did not tell you it was there. other than that test the low and high speed stator windings. if stator replacement is nessasary the tool for removing your mercs flywheel is about 80 dollars now. but the stators have gone out of sight.there is no good test for the switchbox just test all the inputs and look for an output.
gook luck and keep reading the manuels.

Am i to understand that the 'powerpack' is the switchbox then? If so I am aware of what and where this is and its function.
There is what looks like a cut off switch fitted within the boat alongside where the control box is with two black wires coming from it, could this be the emergency cut off that you mentioned? At present it is not connected to the motor as it is off the boat.

One of the wires should be black/yellow..they are the kill wires. To exclude them as a possibility for cause of an engine problem..just remove one of them off the switchbox.

TMD
