Hey everyone.....first time posting but have been doing LOTS of reading, I recently bought a 82 90hp with power trim that needs a wiring harness and while waiting for parts bought a manual and seem to have found a discrepancy and need some of you gurus to help out.
Im trying to figure out and label pins to do continuity and switch testing and found on engine wiring diagram Pin 1(yellow-black) is for choke solenoid but on “controls” diagram Yellow-black shows it’s Pin 6 and that Pin 1 is black-yellow which on engine diagram(Pin 6) black-yellow which goes to mercury switch/switch boxes....which is it ?
if anyone knows I’ll just make the correction in my book so I know

Thank You

For one idea, make sure that you are looking at the correct two diagrams. I got all confused on mine and all the problem was that I had the wrong diagram.

Does your motor have the round plug under the cowling or the quick disconnect plug on the outside of the cowling?

Merc changed the wiring at least once. The pin outs are likely different, but I have never checked it.

I recommend you examine your motor wiring and mark up the book accordingly.

The wire colors were the same, once Merc changed to the standard colors in 1979/80 or thereabouts.

So your choke should be yellow/black
Ig killer is black/yellow
Black is ground; red is power
purple is ignition power
yellow/red is starter solenoid
grey is tach signal

Some mercs got overheat alarms. I do not know if you have that. the wire color is tan.

Thanks for quick replies !!!
Pretty sure I have the correct Diagrams as they are the only two that really correspond with my motor and controls. It’s the round plug with 8 pins under the cowl....had a brain wave and some time so checked with multi meter and Choke(this one actually has enrichner valve) is yellow-black and is conductive to pin 6
will be doing some more checking and mark my book accordingly as on motor diagram it shows choke as yellow-black but on pin 1 instead of 6 whereas the controller and trim diagrams show Yellow-black on pin 6 and Black-yellow on pin 1
Thanks again guys !!!
