I am repairing the floor in my boat and need some help with what I should use. I cut out the entire rear part of the floor, not near the bow. The foam under the floor was nasty from exposure to water etc. So we scooped it all out. Should I re-foam the hull and if so with what type of foam. What does the foam do?? And also what kind of wood, glass cloth, resin etc. should I use in this ski/fish boat application?? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I am in the middle of a floor replacement project. Look for any post with my name, or any reference to "Project Skanky Beast", as well as other rebuilding projects from other people, those posts have helpful information.

The floatation foam displaces water. There should be enough to displace enogh water so the boat will stay level with its full person capacity in the event the boat becomes swamped. In anotherwords, it prevents the boat from sinking, so you have something to cling to. It also is good if the hull gets pierced below the waterline. It gives you the ability to limp home. There are some that will propose that no foam is used when rebuilding, so you do not suffer the same problem down the road from waterlogged foam rotting the structure. Your life and your passengers lives are more important than rot prevention. Life vests are not enough, unless you just want your corpse to be easily found days later after a log sinks your boat. Be safe, foam it, and cover it well when not in use. Leaving the boat out in the rain and snow is what kills it, not foam. Good luck, and post pics....

I'd have to agree, better safe than sorry, although I'm still waiting to see Jason's idea on filling the hull with the capped pvc pipe & foam - I'll be doing my foam project shortly and need ideas as the liquid foam stuff isn't exactly cheap.

I went to West Marine today and they have the liquid foam for $80.00 for a two part system! That is very expensive there has got to be something cheaper out there! If anyone knows of any foam system that is reasonable please let me know!! I think that I should definitely do it though!

What's the matter with soda bottles...
They're Free...
They come in Many sizes... For all the nooks,+ crannies...
They're Self-Draining....
You can trap ALOT of Air... Plenty to Float your Boat....
In twenty years,+ your Grandkids are rebuilding Gramps boat... They Might find 1 or 3 with a little bit of water in them.....

I see this as a next generation of your PVC tubing Idea,jasonj...
