Gentleman, I need assistance:
1982 Mercury O/B 4 cyl w/2carbs - 1carb for 2cyl's.
I've been trying to trouble shoot the problem using my basic knowledge of auto engines & by reading this forum on iboats.com....which has been a great help learning from all you folks.
My idle is slightly rough, not even sure rough is the right word, it seems to have a slight miss while idling, its not jumping all over the place at all.
While in the ocean & increasing my throttle towards WOT the missing gets progressively more noticeable........& at times seems to be surging very slightly....when I bought this engine the gentleman (seemed to know what he was doing) said he had rebuilt the Carbs. & fuel pumps & had replaced the stator & some electrical items that he said Mercury was prone to have had problems with during those years.
While idling:
1. I disconnected each plug wire from the spark plug one at a time & each time it affected the idle...ran rough. which is good. also the spark looked great, real strong on all plug wires.
2. I squeezed the bulb in the gas line and it had no effect on the engine idle & I sprayed a mixture of oil/gas into each Carb throat & it had no effect on idle....other than spraying to much which started to choke the engine.....but that's normal.
Having one carb per 2cyl's.....if I disconnect the top 2 plug wires, at idle should this engine beable to run on the 2 lower cyl's ? ...and vica-versa
Thanks
