In a nutshell: I've owned a 1984 Seaswirl, w/ Evinrude 115 since new. Engine has never given me a lick of trouble. Starts everytime and runs great.

1. Motor runs excellent at all speeds, except sometimes will slow down and die during idle. Restarts right away using throttle lever. Could it need idle adjustment?

2. Once engine is warmed up, it keeps running after turning off the key. Sometimes it will stop if I pull it in and out of gear, but not always. Eventually the idle will slow and it will die. Could it be carbon buildup on the pistons? The 16" fiberglass runabout (850 lbs.) with a 15" SS prop revs very easily and has been used primarily for skiing. It will over rev the WOT recommendations if I'm not careful, so I'm not so sure it's carbon buildup. Would a decarb w/Sea Foam hurt?

Any ideas where to start looking Thanks from Sunny California.

I would really reccomend a decarb and a good one is sounds like, that much carbon in a n engine is really bad as it can cause the engine to "run away", more and more rpm untill it pops or runs out of gas.

Just watch where you do cause it is going to smoke like a house on fire for a good bit, I do mine every year and it still smokes like crazy, ti is the carbon being burned off so it is good smoke.

Just to clarify, if you start the engine will it shut off imediately before it gets warm, if not that is a different problem althiugh decarb should be part of your normal maintanence.

There is a black wire with yellow tracer that goes to the ignition switch. When the key is turned to off, that wire should ground the power packs, shorting both packs to ground effectively shutting off the ignition. Check that wire and the key switch. I have a double pack engine (like yours) which had a defective power pack. When the key switch was turned to off, only one pack quick firing. The other kept firing on one bank of cylinders, effectively keeping the engine running, but at a reduced idle rpm. Replaced the pack and it cured the problem.

Make sure you have a good ground at the key switch
