Just purchased this 1983 Johnson 35 HP J35RTS. It is a pull start. I was going to add an elec.starter, however, does this year and model have the capabilities to trickle charge back to my battery? Thank you for your time.

Re: 1983 35 hp Jonhnson

The electric start models (35ECT-35ELCT 35TELCT) were fitted with a stator coil and rectifier but not the rope start models

the electric starting kit is part number 0173964 and costs $462.47 USD

the charging kit is part number 0174037 and costs a further $102.18 USD

Presumably you are planning on acquiring used parts.

Check if you got 3 yellow wires coming out from under the flywheel, or a 3-pin AC lightening outlet.
Then you only need to get the diode rectifier and terminal strip in addition and your charging is up.
Not much for consumption, but should at least keep a starting battery happy.

Yes do that, although AC lighting was not a standard fitting on this model AFAIK but it could have been added.
If it has then the stator coil is already in place and all that is then necessary is to plug in the AC lighting to battery charging kit or to add the rectifier etc as it would be on the electric start model.
